"Buying an Instagram Account: The Due Diligence Checklist"
Engagement quality, follower authenticity, the original-email question and shadowban checks — everything to verify before paying for an Instagram account.
Instagram accounts are among the most traded digital properties — and among the easiest to dress up. Followers can be bought, engagement can be botted, and an account that looks alive can be algorithmically dead. Here is the checklist experienced buyers run before any money moves.
1. Follower authenticity
The number means nothing; the composition means everything.
- Engagement rate: likes + comments per post divided by followers. Healthy accounts typically sit between 1% and 5%. Far below that suggests dead or bought followers; suspiciously above, engagement pods or bots.
- Comment quality: real comments reference the content. Walls of emojis and "Nice pic!" are bot signatures.
- Follower geography: ask for a screen recording of the professional dashboard's audience tab. If the account sells "US audience" but the top countries don't match, the price is wrong.
- Growth curve: steady growth is organic; vertical cliffs are purchases or giveaway spikes — audiences that follow for a prize engage with nothing afterwards.
2. Reach and the shadowban question
An account can keep its followers and lose its distribution. Ask for recent reach and impressions (last 30 days) from the professional dashboard, and check whether recent posts appear under the hashtags they use. Reach that collapsed months ago and never recovered is the classic sign of a penalized account — and the reason a seller might be selling.
3. The @handle and the niche
Part of an account's value is the handle itself — short, generic, brandable handles carry value independent of the audience. The other part is niche coherence: an account that changed themes three times has an audience that follows nothing in particular. Scroll the full grid; the history tells you what the followers actually signed up for.
4. What must come with the sale
- The original email used to create the account — the single most important item. With it, the account is fully yours; without it, the original owner retains a recovery path. On Alpha Account Market, listings declare this explicitly ("original email included" is a filterable attribute).
- No active strikes or restrictions — declared in the listing and verified by you during inspection.
- Removal of all linked devices, sessions, connected apps and third-party tools at handover.
5. Handover, in the safe order
Never pay a stranger directly for an account — the escrow flow exists precisely for this:
- Your payment goes into custody — the seller sees it's secured but can't touch it.
- Seller hands over the account and the original email.
- You immediately change passwords on both, replace recovery email/phone, enable 2FA on your device, and audit active sessions.
- You verify the audience numbers against what the listing declared — you have a 7-day inspection window.
- You confirm, and only then the seller is paid. Misrepresented metrics? Open a dispute instead — a human reviews the evidence.
